Our Founding Story
SCMUN's journey began with one visionary student who saw a need and took action. Riya Ahmed Hundal, a second-year Journalism specialist at UTSC, repeatedly encountered the same question from peers: "Why doesn't UTSC have a Model UN club?" Noticing that while interest existed, initiative was lacking, Riya decided to be the change herself.
What started as a simple idea quickly transformed into a campus-wide movement under Riya's passionate leadership. In just five remarkable months, she grew the UTSC Model UN delegation from non-existence to over 200 dedicated delegates. This extraordinary growth wasn't merely numerical—it represented a fundamental shift in campus culture, creating space for students interested in international relations, diplomacy, and global affairs to find their community.
Riya's impact extended far beyond organizational skills. Known as someone who makes a meaningful difference wherever she goes, she instilled core values that continue to define SCMUN today: inclusivity, excellence, and the belief that student initiatives can create profound educational opportunities. Her journalism background brought unique perspectives to how we approach diplomatic communication and international issues.
Though she has now moved on to continue her studies at another institution, we are committed to keeping the Model UN legacy she started thriving at UTSC. Her foundational work has enabled generations of UTSC students to experience the transformative power of Model UN simulations, building skills in diplomacy, public speaking, and international cooperation that serve them well beyond graduation. SCMUN continues to evolve while honoring the spirit of inclusivity and excellence that defined its beginnings.
