UTEP adds Buffalo transfer Zid Powell

UTEP picks up highly touted transfer guard

Article by UTEPZay

UTEP landed Buffalo transfer Zid Powell over the weekend, which leaves the Miners with 1 remaining scholarship. Powell, a 6-4 guard out of Philadelphia, averaged 13 points per game last season for the Buffalos, which was second on the team. He also put up 4 rebounds a contest and 2 assists per game. Powell also got it done on the defensive side of the ball, leading the team in steals with 53.

Powell originally began his college career at Community College of Beaver County, where he averaged 14 PPG and shot 52% from the field. Powell would then transfer to Harcum College where he would spend the next two years of his career. In his final year at Harcum, Powell would go on to average 17 PPG and 7 RPG while being named an NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American. He scored over 20 points in 6 games that year.

Powell can score, he put that on display when he had 81 points in a game at Beaver County in honor of Kobe Bryant. He purposely air-balled a free throw to keep it at 81. This was the day after Kobe died.

UTEP hosted Powell last week, along with some other recruits. With one scholarship left, Golding and his staff will be extremely picky. Will we see the Miners pick up a big-man, or a veteran point guard?
