All crops are the result of the selection of easy-to-cultivate, stable-yielding, and tasty strains from native plants and strains that had been "harvested" from their fruits in order to obtain a stable supply of food for humans who started farming about 10,000 years ago. This initial process is called domestication, and subsequent improvements are called breeding.


We study the biology of crop breeding using molecular genetic and genomic methods, using rice, the staple food of the Japanese, as our main research material.
