The State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) is the guiding document for the wildlife work and funding for all states and territories receiving State Wildlife Grants (SWG) funds. The document identifies Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN), the habitats that they rely on, and describes the actions needed to protect and conserve these valuable natural resources. The SWAP must be updated every ten years. The previous State Wildlife Action Plan can be found at https://dpnr.vi.gov/fish-and-wildlife/wildlife-resources/
A key component of the SWAP in community involvement in the development of priorities, including input by subject experts and major stakeholders. This inclusion of the community ensures that this document is locally relevant and incorporates the knowledge of community experts. This is especially relevant in the US Virgin Islands where there are many community members with substantial knowledge of the flora and fauna of the territory but do not publish in academic journals or reports that agencies often rely upon for information. Stakeholder and community input will develop locally and culturally aligned SMART actions. We appreciate you taking the time to give feedback on the 2025 update of the VI SWAP.
Official comments were accepted from March 2025 on the species lists and on the website information as of July 14, 2025 from July 15, 2025 to August 29, 2025. The website was updated and published on October 1, 2025. We are still welcoming any feedback you have for our next update which is planned for August 2026 at which point we will roll over all content here to an official dpnr.vi.gov webpage. That final update will incorporate both public comments and review from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
