AWOL Driver Rules

INCLEMENT WEATHER (snow, heavy rain, flooding, fog, etc.)

  • Check forecast

  • If hazardous conditions are indicated anywhere on your travel route, you MUST check in with AWOL Advisor before leaving Vermillion

  • If there are concerns, DO NOT TRAVEL--stop and call the advisor

  • Wait or stay overnight if necessary. Emergency funds are in your travel advance (do not let cost be a deterrent to stopping)

  • Use 511 or another road travel app to check conditions

  • Do not use cruise control if conditions are not dry and clear

  • Stay behind snow plows (at a safe distance – debris can fly and hit your vehicle)

VEHICLE OPERATION SAFETY

  • Seat belts must be used at all times (driver should check that everyone is buckled in before putting van in drive)

  • Rotate drivers every 3-4 hours - You may do two shifts in the same day, but after 3 hours you must stop and change drivers

  • Front seat passenger must be awake and alert

  • Absolutely no operating a mobile device (texting/calling/gps) while driving--driver’s telephone should be put away or given to another passenger while driving

  • Only authorized drivers (submitted volunteer form and copy of driver’s license/insurance) may operate vehicles

  • Driving through the night is NOT permitted (midnight – 6am)

  • Count group members at each stop before leaving again

  • Non-USD affiliated people are NOT allowed in the vehicle

  • Keep vehicle clean (SLs must clean out any items upon return)

  • Clean off windshield, windows, lights, and check wipers before leaving parking area

  • Site Leaders: Call or text AWOL Advisor when departing & arriving between Vermillion and your destination.

MECHANICAL PROBLEMS, VANDALISM, THEFT, ACCIDENTS

  • Report issues to Fleet and Travel

  • Work orders for repairs over $35 – call 1-800-543-2372

  • The registration slip is in the glove box, along with travel guide and State of SD Liability Card for proof of insurance

  • Emergency car kits are provided by the Gallagher Center

  • Road-side assistance is NOT provided; SLs may decide to check with their group members to if anyone has a membership that can assist group if need be.
