Joan Bybee is a Professor Emerita in the Department of Linguistics at the University of New Mexico. Throughout her career she has studied the structure of language through the cognitive processes that are active when language is used and the resulting usage patterns. She has investigated language change in individual languages and in large crosslinguistic surveys. She research investigates phonology, morphology, grammaticalization (change in both form and meaning) and constructional change.
