MSGSA PIZZA PARTY!!

The MSGSA would like to invite you to an End of Year Pizza Party! The party is being sponsored by the Department, and the Chair and Director of Grad studies (Prof. Savage and Prof. Burkett) will be present near the end of the event to speak to grad students about their experience, what supports they need, etc.

MSGSA Flower Pot Painting

With the dismal, rainy April weather that’s upon us, why not come out and paint a cute little flower pot where you can grow your own happiness? The MSGSA invites you to our flower pot painting event, which will be on April 25th @ 4 p.m. in the grad round (STEM 540).

 

You will be provided with the pot and paint/ paintbrushes, as well as some soil and a seed of your choosing to plant in your beautiful pot. 

MSGSA Pi Day!

Every mathematician’s favourite day of the year is nearly upon us … PI DAY!!!

 

Come out to the Grad Lounge (STM 540) on Pi Day (March 14, obviously) at 4 p.m. to eat some pie, play some games and express your love for one of the most fundamental numbers of our time!

 

Activities include a blind pie tasting, speed math competition based on pi, and of course, a competition to see who can memorize the most digits of pi! Think you can beat 74 digits?? That’s what you’re up against!

MSGSA Trivia Night Part 2!

On February 29th, 2024, we’d like to invite you to our second trivia night of the year! It will be an evening filled with fast-paced trivia questions, as well as snacks and drinks for munching.

 

This time, we will be using Kahoot to run the game. This is a speed-based responding platform, however we hope that the multiple choice nature of the questions will make it more accessible to all.

 

You can play as either a team or individual, but for teams, only one device is needed to access the platform.

MSGSA Cookie BONANZA!!

We would like to invite you to our Holiday Christmas Bonanza happening next Tuesday, December 12 at 5 pm in STM664.


We will be providing cookie making kits for you to decorate - but fear not, if artistic ability escapes you, we’ll also be providing cookies just for the eating with hot cocoa.


We will also be showing a Holiday themed movie, which will be selected based on participant votes. 


We ask that if you would like to participate, that you please fill in the following MS Forms where you can indicate that you will be decorating cookies AND you can vote on the movie we will be watching.

MSGSA Presents: Trivia Night!

The MSGSA would like to invite you to next week's trivia night! The event will be hosted on Tuesday, November 28th, from 4:30 to 6:30 in STM 664. 


You can participate alone or in a team of up to 4 people. If you'd like to be on a team but don't have one, just let us know and we'll make teams!


Questions will be provided in both French and English using a PowerPoint slideshow. Note: there will not be a speed component to this competition. Points will be allocated based solely on correct responses (responses will be collected by filling out a paper form and tallied at the end of the competition), so if you are worried about quick-thinking, worry not!


Last, there will be a PRIZE for the winning team! So if nothing else will convince you to participate, maybe this will be it.

Halloween hangout

We will be hosting a Halloween hangout this Tuesday, Oct 31, from 1-2pm, in the Grad lounge (STM 540).


Treats, games and good times will be provided - all you need to bring is your sweet tooth!


Come hangout, eat candy and show off your spooktacular costumes!

Grant-Writing Workshop

Are you planning on applying for a graduate scholarship this Fall, like NSERC or OGS? This workshop will teach you about the opportunities available to you and help you hone your writing skills!


The first session, on Monday, September 18th from 2:30pm - 4:00pm in STEM 201, will be an information session. You'll learn about the available scholarships, their deadlines, what you'll need to prepare for your applications, and what to include (or not) in your research proposal. You'll then be invited to write a draft research proposal for the second session, on Monday, September 25th from 2:30pm - 4:00pm in STEM 201. During the second session, you'll receive feedback on your draft from your peers and professors.

Pizza meet-and-greet

Welcome (back) to the University of Ottawa! Whether you're a new or returning student, you're invited to a pizza party hosted by the MSGSA. You'll have the chance to get to know your fellow mathematics and statistics graduate students. There will also be a brief presentation by the MSGSA executive team, explaining who we are and what we do.


The pizza meet-and-greet will be on Wednesday, September 20th at 6:00pm in the room STEM 464. Please fill out the google form to RSVP so we know how many people will be attending.

Beach Day

2023-08-02

To alleviate the heat of these days, the MSGSA would like to invite you to spend an afternoon at the beach!


We plan to visit the stunning beach at Aylmer in Gatineau. Feel free to bring your swimming suit if you would like to enjoy the fresh water of the Ottawa River, or simply come and play some games of your preference, you also have the option of laying down on the sand and relaxing. We recommend you bring sunscreen and bug repellent.


Next, we will visit the lively Rue Principale where we can choose among the many dining options there. After dinner, you have the option of staying and watching a magical sunset at the beach.


We will meet on the first floor of STEM at 4 pm and walk to the Rideau Centre from there. After that, we will take bus number 59 from Rideau Center until the bus stop at Eardley/Rome-Gedron and walk 5 minutes to the beach. Make sure to bring your UPass or some change (around $8.50) for the bus back and forth. Note that Presto cards do not work with STO.

Lawn Games

The MSGSA invites you to an evening of lawn games on July 14 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Please bring a sheet of cloth to sit on if you want to relax, and feel free to bring your favorite games. We'll also provide snacks and drinks!


We'll meet on the first floor of STEM in front of the elevator at 6:30 pm and walk to Major's Hill Park. You can also join us directly at the park.

Paint Night

Join us for a fun evening of painting and planting at our upcoming social event on May 5th at 5:30pm in STEM 664. We will provide you with a flower pot and paint to decorate the pot. We will also be providing soil and flower seeds.

Bowling Night

The MSGSA invites you to ​join us for a relaxing night of bowling at West Park Bowling (1205 WellingtonSt. W) on March 24, 2023. Feel free to drop in at any time from 6pm-8pm. This is a good chance to grab a drink or some snacks, as well as catch up with other grad students. You can either make your own way to West Park Bowling or join us at the STEM building at 5:15pm so we can get the LRT together.

Board Game Night

This is a good opportunity for you to catch up with your classmates and learn some new board games. We will also provide pizza and drinks. Pizza Party

The Mathematics & Statistics Graduate Student Association (MSGSA) would like to welcome all of the new math & stats graduate students to the department (as well as welcome back returning students)! We will be hosting a welcome (back) party in the STEM building on Friday September 16 from 12PM to 3PM, where we will be providing free pizza and drinks. Note that there will be vegetarian and vegan options as well. This is a great opportunity to meet new and returning graduate students, have a free lunch, and get to know your MSGSA executives! 

Pottery Night

Join us on August 10th from 4:30PM-6:00PM at Crock-A-Doodle (1980 Ogilvie Rd, inside the Loblaws at Gloucester Centre, near Blair station) to paint some pottery. You can pick your own piece of  pottery to paint. Most pieces cost about $20-$40 and we will cover up to $25 of the cost of your pottery.
