My name is Yein Oh and I am currently the college counsellor at Utahloy International School Guangzhou (https://utahloy.cn/gz/).
A South Korean national who grew up in Thailand, I completed a BSc in Psychology in a liberal arts college in the US. After trying out academia (involving quitting a PhD in Clinical Psychology, completing a MSc in Cognitive Science, publishing 4 peer-reviewed papers along the way), I realised that I wanted to pursue a more tangible and immediately rewarding career. (Research is super rewarding but the outcomes are not always immediately felt!)
While studying and working in Hungary, I found that teaching psychology and supporting students with university applications was just what I was looking for. College counselling was (and still is) the perfect blend between acquiring knowledge about various systems, getting to know people on a deeper level, and being creative.
However, I couldn't let go of the reading research & writing part of academia so I continue to write articles about psychology in college counselling.
While supporting students in their university application journey, I immediately noticed how the university application journey is potentially a very stressful one. It was for me too in my own high school years, but the stakes seemed much higher now and the impact on well-being more deeply felt in my interactions with students.
I also noted the lack of resources on this topic, although the relevance and salience was clear in many conversations I had with many stakeholders involved in the journey.
I needed a reason to start a project, and happily discovered that the final component of the UCSD's College Counselling Certificate course I signed up for was to create anything about any topic that I care about in college counselling. So, this website was born!
Huge thanks and acknowledgements to: Remy Wu, Maria Castaneda, Lindsey Walsh, Rorie Macdonald, and Blake Thomsen for their invaluable insights and feedback to the website.
I hope you find these resources as helpful as I've found them to be in both my professional and personal life.
And If you find any resources that you think would be a great addition to the website, please share with me. This website is and will remain an organic creation.
And I'm also open / look forward to all feedback! Don't hesitate to reach out.
