Office of connected learning (OCL)
The UWB OCL is the primary hub for connecting students with hands-on, experiential learning opportunities that bridge classroom knowledge with real-world application. The OSR and the OCL manage a Connected Huskies Opportunities Database where students can find faculty members who are lookin for student researchers and collaborators for their projects. Many of these positions are paid research assistant roles. The database platform helps students find various experiential learning opportunities, including research, scholarships, study abroad, and community engagement (for more info on Community-Engaged Leaninr & Research, email them at uwbcelr@uw.edu). In most cases, students do not need prior background knowledge to participate in research, they just require students that are enthusiastic and eager to learn! Email them at uwbur@uw.edu for questions regarding Undergraduate Research. The OCL also provides advising services to help students navigate their options, find opportunities that align with their interests, and prepare their application materials. To schedule an appointment with them visit their Contact Us page. If you would like to present your research project the OCL hosts the Student Academic Showcase, which is a campus-wide event where students can present their research and creative projects to the community. Students must be sponsored by the project faculty member in order to be able to participate. To view previous events, take a look at the Student Academic Showcase page. The OCL also hosts a variety of workshops and events throughout the year designed to help students get most out of their academic and professional sourney. These events are highly practical and provide direct support that you can use immediately. Some examples of workshops and events that they host are the Application & Proposal Workshops, which focus on the practical skills needed to apply for opoortunities (e.g., sessions on how to write a strong abstract for research presentation, craft a personal statement for scholarship applications, or create a compelling resume). Another example are the Skill-Building Workshops, where they teach students specific skills that are valuable in research and professional settings (e.g., grant writing basics, research methodology, or data analysis). They also often host Networking Events, where students can connect with faculty, alumni, and community partners through "meet and greet" sessions or forums where faculty members discuss their ongoing research and project needs. They also host Information Sessions, which provide detailed information about specific programs, such as study abroad opportunities, or how to get involved in community-engaged projects. To view their calendar, take a look at their Events page. The OCL encourages students to join Student Cohorts which are selective programs that groups students together to provide a more intesive, focused, and collaborative learning experience, where students can develop their skills, connect with communities and peer support, obtian mentorship, participate on hands-on and project-based experiential learning, and by the end of the program have a completed project or body of work that can help you stand out in the job market or when applying to graduate school. The OCL provides a wide variety of resources, so we encourage you to explore their page to find out about what else they have to offer!
