Overview
UWB provides a comprehensive suite of financial resources to help students afford their education, encompassing various forms of aid to meet diverse needs. The Office of Financial Aid is the central hub, offering guidance on state and institutional funding, including grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study opportunities for eligible students.
UWB also provides specialized support for students facing financial hardship through programs like Emergency Aid Funds, which address immediate unforeseen costs.
Below you will find a range of scholarships and financial aid resources. For most, we have drawn language directly from the relevant UW office or resource.
Tips
Apply to as many scholarships and other financial support opportunities as possible (preferably all the resourcesfor which you may be elegible)
We highly encourage getting in contact with the departments/units that provide the funds (via email or phone, if necessary, but preferably in person), whether it is to learn more about the opportunity, check on the status of your application, or simply inquire about additional options available to you
Apply as soon as the scholarships and opportunities are available! The longer you wait, the less funds may be available to you
The Office of Financial Aid
The UWB Office of Financial Aid is the primary source for UWB students regarding all aspects of financial assistance for their education. Their main goal is to help students navigate the complex world of college financing and ensure that finances are not a barrier to receiving a world-class education at UW Bothell.

Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WAFSA)
What is it?
It is a state-specific application used in Washington to determine eligibility for state financial aid programs for students who are not eligible for federal financial aid due to their immigration status.
Why should I apply?
Student accessibility to funds. WAFSA was created specifically for students who are not eligible to file the FAFSA application due to their immigration status, being one of the main sources of funding for undocumented students
Funds beyond tuition. WAFSA helps cover a wide range of educational expenses, including tuition, fees, books, and other living costs
Used to determine institutional aid. Many colleges and universities in WA also use WAFSA info to determine a student's eligibility for their own institutional scholarships and grants. This opens your doors to financial aid from the university
The information provided to WAFSA is protected. It is not shared with federal immigration agencies, which helps address common concerns about privacy and security
It's a requirement for In-State Tuition. The WAFSA application often serves as a way for students to affirm their WA State residency for tuition purposes. By meeting certain residency requirements (e.g., living in WA for a specific period and graduating for a WA high school), students can pay the lower in-state tuition rates, which can save you tens of thousands of dollars
It can lead to other opportunities. Students with an Employment Authorization Document (EAD), such as DACA recipients, may be able to get a job through the State Work-Study program (listed below) if they meet the program's requirements. The WAFSA is the first step to being considered for these opportunities. Additionally, some external scholarships require students to have a completed WAFSA on file with their college
How can I access it?
The Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC) is the Washington State government agency responsible for overseeing higher education in the state. They are the official administrators of the WAFSA. The WSAC encourages students to take the Questionnaire to determine eligibility for WAFSA. After taking the questionnaire, you must Sign Up for WASFA Application. For general information, visit the WSAC WASFA page. The website can be translated into a vast array of languages, and applications are in English and Spanish. The UWB Financial Aid department has a page dedicated to Information on WAFSA like priority dates and deadlines, requirements for application, and additional steps after completing the application.

UW Bothell Scholarships
What is it?
The UW Bothell Scholarships are a number of scholarships that are paid for by individuals, organizations, UWB alumni, businesses, and associations to the University. Instead of having a separate application for each individual scholarship, students can complete one application and be considered for multiple scholarships.
What does it require?
The application contains several short answer questions regarding your academic achievements, financial need, and community service (we recommend you take advantage of the Writing & Communication Center to help you out with the application). It also requires a copy of your resume.
How can I access it?
The application is available once a year during Spring Quarter, so make sure to check the UW Bothell Scholarships page during Spring Quarter to submit your application once it becomes available (the earlier the better!). It is important to note that submissions of the application past the due date (or applications that are incomplete) will not be considered (that is why we encourage you to take a visit to the Writing Center and submit as early as possible).

Emergency Aid Funds
What is it?
A program designed to help currently enrolled students who are facing unexpected, unavoidable, and unplanned expenses that could impact their academic success and personal well-being.
What can I use it for?
Some examples of expenses that could be covered by this aid are food security, emergency medical or dental costs, emergency or temporary housing and living expenses, natural disasters, and unexpected costs that are not a part of the regular cost of attendance. It does not cover for things like tuition, fees, study abroad costs, regular anticipated fixed expenses (such as rent), parking tickets, car payments, non-emergency travel, and other non-essential or anticipated expenses.
How can I access it?
To access the form and view additional information on the aid, visit the UWB Emergency Aid page.

State Work-Study Programs
What is it?
The WA State Work Study program is a form of financial aid that helps low- and middle-income students earn money for their education through a job. The program is designed to lessen students' reliance on loans while helping them gain valuable work experience. Many employers who participate in the program often fire their work study students for permanent positions after graduation. They are part-time jobs that are often on campus that allow students to earn money to help cover their expenses (this can be beneficial as undocumented students might face employment discrimination in the general job market).
How does it work?
Students don't need to fill out a separate application, they are automatically considered for the program when they submit their WAFSA. The WSAC provides a page dedicated to State Work-Study. The University of Washington Bothell also has a page dedicated to State Work-Study and how it applies to the university.
Who is eligible?
Students with a valid Employment Authorization Document (EAD) who have completed the WAFSA are the ones considered for State Work Study.

Short-Term Loans
What is it for?
The UWB Office of Student Financial Aid provides short-term loans to assist students with temporary cash flow problems to pay things like tuition, books, or other essential expenses.
Who is eligible?
In order to be eligible for the loans you must be currently attending the University and registered in regular credit-earning classes, not have any outstanding short-term loans, have a good repayment record on any prior short-term loans (no more than 2 late payments), and have a means of repayment by the next quarter.
How much do they offer?
The loan amounts range of up to $2,500 for Undergraduates, and up to $3,200 for Graduate or Professional students. There is no interest on the loans, but there is a $30 service charge that is added to the repayment amount for each loan. An additional $30 service charge is assessed if you request a one-time extension of the due date. Loans are typically due by the fourth Friday of the next quarter, or whenever additional financial aid comes in (whichever comes first).
How can I access it?
To apply, students can usually access the application online through MyUW by selecting Short-Term Loan Application. Loans cannot be processed between quarters, meaning that students must currently be registered and attending classes in a given quarter. To learn more about the short-term loans offered by the university, visit Financial Aid's Short-Term Loans page.

The Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards (OMSFA)
The OMSFA is a service at the University of Washington that helps undergraduates, graduates, and alumni students navigate the process of applying for prestigious scholarships and fellowships. While the financial aid office helps with need-based financial aid like grants and loans, OMSFA focuses on helping students earn competitive scholarships and fellowships that can provide significant funding and recognition. While the resources are provided by UW Seattle campus, it is recommended that students seek advising through the Office of Connected Learning at UWB. Beyond their database, the OMSFA provides additional resources for students to explore, including additional tools (e.g., list of additional free search engines for scholarships), a scholarship guide for Undocu Students, and a variety of workshop events that students can join to learn more about how to navigate and apply for scholarships.

Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards Database
What is it?
This office’s resources are available to all UW Bothell students, and it provides a database for scholarships applicable to you. It is a database that works through keywords, which also allows for filter applications for scholarships and funds that are more tailored to you. The UW Bothell Office of Financial Aid provides a page dedicated to this database: UWB Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards Home page. However, if you have questions about the scholarships provided, you should also contact the Office of Connected Learning, as they might also have some useful information about specific scholarships within that database.
How can I access it?
Through the UWB Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards Home page, we have already applied a filter for "US Citizenship: No" and "Undocumented: Yes," therefore the scholarships shown in the Results are those that do not require citizenship and accept undocumented applicants. To view the options, take a look at the Undocu Filtered Scholarship Search (for the unfiltered selection: OMSFA Scholarship Database). The OMSFA also created a short youtube video (2:30 min) on How to Utilize OMSFA Database.

Additional Tools
What is it?
The OMSFA provides a list of additional free online scholarship search tools that students can utilize. To view the full list visit OMSFA's Search Tools page. Here are a couple of search tools listed:
The WashBoard is one of the most useful databases for undocumented students. It's specifically for students in Washington State and many of the scholarships listed are open to students who are not U.S. citizens. The site allows you to create a profile that can match you with scholarships for which you are eligible, including those that do not have a citizenship requirement. It's an excellent resource because it focuses on state-specific opportunities like those tied to the WASFA eligibility.
Steps:
Register yourself, and then sign in
After you have signed in, it will ask you to build "MyProfile." Your profile will require you to fill out a lot of questions regarding your contact info, background info (gender, religion, and ethnicity/heritage), level of financial need, academic info, college plans, group and hobby activities, affiliations, works and services, personal info (birthdate, personal statement, skills, talents, and gifts), and attachments (transcripts, emails for letters of recommendations, award letters, etc.)
Once you are done, save your profile
The "My Matches" section is where the WashBoard utilizes smart matching tech that compares the information in your profile with the eligibility requirements and preferences of the scholarships listed on the site. This process automatically generates a personalized list of scholarships that you are most likely to qualify for. This saves you from having to manually check the requirements for hundreds of different scholarships.
The "My Applications" section is where you manage all the scholarship applications you've started or submitted through the platform.
Potential Drawbacks
The "offseason" is from April to November, which is when most scholarships aren't accepting applicants
It does not provide opportunities from organizations outside of WA
The platform doesn't offer a uniform application process, as some scholarships might require you to leave the site and complete the application on an external website
The WashBoard Contact
Schedule: Mon-Fri from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
Contact Info: (888) 535-0747, washboardinfo@wsac.wa.gov
The College Success Foundation (CSF)
This is an excellent resource for undocumented students, especially in Washington. The foundation is a major supporter of students from underserved backgrounds. They explicitly mention the Empowering Equality Scholarship for historically marginalized students in Washington state, and they provide comprehensive resources related to the WASFA, which is the key application for state-based financial aid for undocumented students.
Steps:
Take a look at their list of scholarships
Navigate to the "Eligibility" section on the left hand menu to determine whether you are eligible for the scholarship or fund
If you are eligible for the fund, navigate to the "Application" section. It will show you the application and how to submit it
If there is no "Application" section, and the "Eligibility" section says " to learn more about the specific application procedures for the [name of scholarship], please visit:" and UWB is listed, typically the link will redirect you to the UW Seattle Financial Aid page. In that case, it is best to simply contact the UWB Office of Financial Aid and inquire about that specific scholarship or fund
Potential Drawbacks
Not a comprehensive scholarship database, limited only to the scholarships provided by them
Very specific requirements (focused on the "Dreamer" narrative, the idea of a high achieving, resilient, and academically prepared student
The platform doesn't offer a uniform application process, as some scholarships might require you to leave the site and complete the application on an external website

Scholarship Guide for Undocumented Students
What is it?
The OMSFA created a Scholarship Guide for Undocumented Students, which gives students a quick guide on how to navigate scholarships, like tips on how to stay organized when applying for scholarships, tools available to make the search easier, as well as a couple of scholarships that Undocu students are eligible for. They also provide additional guides on their Scholarship Lists & Guides.
What does it provide?
The Undocu Scholarship Guide serves as a quick starting point for students to learn how to navigate through scholarships. The guide recommends the following steps:
Scholarship Searching
Before searching for scholarships, they recommend that you identify the following:
Define your study fields and interests
Include your heritage, gender, future goals, and other personal aspects
Consider your options more broadly
Then, make a list of keywords that describe you and your interests within the following categories:
Studies. What are you currently studying?
Identities. What is your heritage, gender, and other personal aspects of you that make you you?
Future. What are your future goals?
Activities. What are you currently (or were) involved in?
Staying Organized
Here are the following tips on how to maintain yourself organized:
Schedule time periods dedicated to searching for scholarships--they recommend an hour block on the first day of the month to search for scholarships
Track your scholarships that you've already applied for, as well as the ones that you are interested in applying for--they recommend the usage of spreadsheets, online calendars, and personal planners, as well as their OMSFA Scholarship & Fellowship Spreasheet Tracker (which can also be found on their Applying for Scholarships page)
Explore scholarships that offer more than just financial support, as some awards provide opportunitites that can lead to the gaining of experience or access to networks curriculum (e.g., programs where they teach basic concepts of how networking works). Here are the following recommendations they provide:
Work Study (for DACA recipients)
Scholarship Search Tools (they provide a list on their Search Tools page)
UW Library Search Aid (they provide guidelines on their Undocumented Students library page)
United Negro College Fund (UNCF) (a non-profit organization supporting the education of minority communitites. You can access it through their Scholarship Search Database page)

The fellowships can be filtered by your type of degree (Master's, Doctoral, Postdoctoral), academic field (Arts, Humanities, Professional programs, Social Sciences, STEM), and additional subcategories (diversity awards and international student eligible). Fellowship discriptions will generally contain application deadlines, student eligibility, criteria for application, application material, requirements for usage of the fellowship, or the nomination process. If you are in need of assistance the Office of Connected Learning may be able to assist you with any questions you might have about a specific fellowship.
