PICO-8 is a virtual console and game engine that lets users create, share, and play small games with simple pixel graphics:
Features
PICO-8 has limited sound and graphical capabilities similar to 1980s 8-bit systems, which encourages creativity. Users can create games, music, sound effects, sprites, and maps using a Lua-based environment.
Sharing
Users can export their games as HTML5 web games or executable programs for Windows, macOS, or Linux. They can also upload their games to Lexaloffle's BBS for other users to play in a web browser.
Availability
PICO-8 is available as an app for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux (Intel), and Raspberry Pi.
Tools
PICO-8 comes with a commandline, cartridge creation tools, and an online cartridge browser called SPLORE.
Notable games
The original version of Celeste was created in four days as part of a game jam using PICO-8.
