Course Description
Language and communication are imperative for individuals to function in society and are at the heart of learning. This course explores the concept of language and the way it shapes how we think. A foundational understanding of the study of language provides insight into understanding the relationship between language and culture. The cultural differences that students bring to the classroom and their effects on learning will be examined. This course prepares future educators to create a classroom learning environment which values and supports the varying backgrounds and cultures of their students through the study of language acquisition, cognitive development and language diversity. (3 credits)
Course Objectives
Examine and differentiate the linguistic components of language
Identify and analyze the stages and theories of language development
Develop an understanding of verbal and non-verbal components that contribute to communication, including their cultural differences
Recognize and value the issues and complexities of language as a cultural practice
Demonstrate skills to present personal considerations and observations professionally
Critically evaluate colleagues’ work and oneself regarding language and culture

About me:
As a speech-language pathologist, I have had the pleasure of working with people from infancy to adulthood in a variety of settings including personal homes, preschools, grade schools, hospitals and clinics in New York, Louisiana, Florida, and North Carolina. I hold a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from The American Speech-Language Hearing Association as well as a public school certification in North Carolina.
Currently, I live in the mountains of North Carolina with my husband and our three children. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family, volunteering, gardening, and crafting.
