Professional Credentials
General Statements:
MS-ARP students will identify professional development goals relevant to your needs and interests with guidance from consortium members as appropriate and with the program director. Your development goals will include specific objectives for advancing professional credentials, such as licensure or certification in your area of study or an allied field. Regardless of the professional development path you pursue, your credential objectives will become part of your MS-ARP Program Plan, and thus your progress will be regularly reviewed with the program director to ensure you have the support you need along the way.
MS-ARP students are expected to familiarize themselves with the governing bodies for the credentials they wish to pursue. This may include understanding requirements at both national and state levels. For example, in Minnesota, there is a single entity that regulates and enforces building industry professionals: the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience and Interior Design (AELSLAGID), although different entities oversee licensure at the national level for architects and interior designers.
Work Experience Hours:
Most students will need to document work experience hours as part of licensure or certification. You are expected to become familiar with experience hour requirements and to properly log these hours with the governing body. For example, to become fully registered as an architect in the United States, you will need to document a minimum number of work hours for experiences within an architecture firm (Setting A) and outside of an architecture firm (Setting O). The kinds of work experience you need are determined by national or state boards.
Support:
The architecture licensing advisor, the practicum course and its instructor are key resources for you in this regard and can help you navigate your professional credential progress throughout your degree.
