Program Policies and Expectations
Program Policies and Expectations
Ensuring success for everyone in the MS-ARP program and its Consortium for Research Practices requires a shared effort. The following policies and statements articulate expectations that are specific to MS-ARP students and degree requirements. MS-ARP affiliated faculty advisors and practice mentors also agree to relevant policies and expectations to participate in the consortium.
University Policies: The University of Minnesota has a policy library for standard policies that apply to all University of Minnesota community members. Any number of these policies may at times apply to MS-ARP students, including for example, those addressing Education and Student Life, Human Resources, Information Technology and Research, Student Conduct Code or Copyright Ownership. University policies supersede college, school or program policies.
College and School Statements and Policies: The College of Design (CDes) and its Department of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Interior Design (ALI) may also have policies, expectations or general statements that apply to MS-ARP students; these are conveyed to all CDes or ALI students via email or more typically are stated in the course syllabus. MS-ARP students should be familiar with the kind of information provided in a general handbook for all School of Architecture graduate students; and concurrent students are responsible for understanding policies related to their concurrent (e.g., M.Arch or Ph.D) degree.
MS-ARP Program Expectations: To the greatest extent possible, the MS-ARP degree integrates professional experiences with academic coursework. The syllabus for each required course will most accurately reflect the specific expectations and calendar milestones related to professional experiences as appropriate for each semester. The information provided below is intended to give you an overview of the most significant program-related expectations. In the case of conflicting dates or information, please consult with the faculty teaching the academic coursework and with the program director.
International Student Policies and Expectations: MS-ARP international students are responsible for understanding all ISSS policies and expectations regarding their status as international students. In addition to the wealth of information on the ISSS website, international MS-ARP students are expected to consult with an ISSS advisor on a regular basis and especially regarding the paid Research Practice Internship with a consortium member firm or industry partner.

Generative AI Expectations and Policies:
Instructors at the University may allow or prohibit the use of Generative AI (GenAI) tools in their courses. Course syllabi should define acceptable and unacceptable uses of GenAI, reference relevant academic policies, and support students in reaching compliance. Students should consult their instructors if they are unsure what constitutes acceptable use. All people who use AI in their University of Minnesota work and studies are responsible for understanding the policies that support and enable data and information security, ethics, and legal compliance. Always confirm GenAI use permissions with internship firms and follow all data privacy rules. Refer to the current Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources policy. Inappropriate use and/or scholastic dishonesty will be responded to per the Office for Community Standards. GenAI tools are not substitutes for their intellectual effort or scholarly expression. Active engagement with course materials, critical thinking and judgment, and expression of original ideas should never be outsourced to technology. We encourage transparency regarding novel uses and experimentation, and welcome discussion about new use cases with a critical lens. As the AI landscape evolves globally and at the UMN, this policy is subject to revision.
