Title: Graded Betti numbers of straight polyomino ideals
Abstract: The Graded Betti numbers of ideals in polynomial rings are of great interest in algebra, and it is an open problem to compute them in general. Classes of ideals generated from various combinatorial objects are frequently studied. One such combinatorial object is a tiling, an arrangement of tiles to exactly cover a given area without overlap.
In this talk, we use a particular kind of tiling called a straight polyomino tiling to generate monomial ideals. We use a novel ideal splitting technique to give a recursive formula for the graded Betti numbers of these ideals.
Title: Bohr’s point of view for studying Dirichlet series
Abstract: H. Bohr developed an original theory to study convergence of Dirichlet series in a half plane. This talk is meant to be an expository account on Bohr’s methods, explore some beautiful connections between the study of Dirichlet series and function theory, and present some deep results that followed from this line of work.
Title: Magic versus logic
Abstract: I invite the math graduate students to my modest magic show. Customized for mathematicians, there will not be any sleight of hands. Instead, my performance shall be explainable with pure logic. Or shalln't it? Only one way to find out!!!
