Welcome to the U of M Math Bee (UMMB)!
The information on this page is for UMMB 2025, which took place in February. It will be updated for future UMMB events. For results, see the Past Competitions page. Questions from past UMMB events can be found on the Practice page.
What is the UMMB?
The UMMB is a math competition for first and second-year students with fun and creative problems to challenge their skills in Calculus 1, 2, Linear Algebra, and Discrete Math. Assemble your team of up to 3 people and compete for U of M Math fame and glory (and prizes)!
How can I participate?
Please fill out this google form. Anyone is welcome to join (including non-UM students). Please form a team of 2 or 3 members before filling out the form.
I don't have a team =(
No problem! Select the "I don't have a team" option in our form to team up with other folks also looking for a team.
Where and when?
We plan to host it on February 26, Wednesday at 5:00 pm. It will take place in Senate Chamber E3-262 EITC.
Unsure of yourself?
Don't sweat it! It's all about having fun and hanging out with your teammates. Even if you haven't covered the material from all the courses, we encourage you to try anyway. You may surprise yourself! You can also create a team accordingly that covers as much knowledge as possible from the courses listed above.
How is it played?
The U of M math grad students will ask a series of questions ranging in difficulty (easy, intermediate, advanced). You get 1 point for easy, 2 points for intermediate, and 3 points for difficult. It's not a race to who gets the question first. If you solve it within the time limit, you earn those points fair and square! We will tally up the scores as we go to declare a team as the 2025 Ultimate UMMB Victors.
I don't want to compete, can I just watch?
Spectators are encouraged! Bring yourself a friend and a flag for your team!
I have a wonderful idea!
Please reach out to the UMMB cordinator Joshua Beaudin.
