The University of Manitoba Graduate Mathematics Society (GMS) is committed to creating an equitable, diverse and inclusive environment for all of our members. We are committed to maintaining the highest standard of conduct and acting with integrity and fairness in all our activities. We expect all members and outside participants to conduct themselves in a responsible manner and abide by the GMS Code of Conduct at any GMS sanctioned event or online space. We expect everyone to treat other members with respect and dignity and to not participate in the discrimination, harassment, or prejudice of another person or group of persons.
Where, when and to whom the code applies:
The Code of Conduct applies to all members of the GMS and all non-member participants of GMS events and spaces.
The Code applies to GMS events and meetings taking place both in-person and online.
The Code applies to GMS group chats, social media, and discord servers.
The Code applies whenever one is representing themselves as a member of the GMS.
Code of Conduct:
Individuals will not threaten, harass, insult, or degrade others.
Individuals will not act in a discriminatory or prejudicial manner.
Individuals will not act violently or aggressively.
Individuals will actively work to create an inclusive environment.
Individuals will follow additional rules imposed on events or online spaces.
Some examples of unacceptable behaviour include but are not limited to: intimidation, offensive or discriminatory jokes, offensive language, personal insults, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual comments or advances.
The GMS does not tolerate behaviour that discriminates against individual characteristics such as race, age, religion, sex, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability, nationality, educational background, or any characteristic protected by law not listed.
How to report non-compliance:
Contact a member of the GMS executive team if you believe someone has violated the code of conduct. Provide details such as when and where it happened and who was involved.
In the case of severe violations individuals may wish to contact the University of Manitoba’s Office of Human Rights and Conflict Management. The GMS may refer individuals to this office if the offence is beyond the GMS’s ability to handle.
Potential consequences for violations include verbal warnings, issuing an apology to the affected party or parties, being banned permanently or temporarily from GMS social activities, and being reported to the university.
