The intention to create a game centered around a simple mechanic arose very early. I wanted it to be as pleasant as possible for the player and to be simple enough to handle, yet offering a powerful advantage to those who master it.
Consequently, I designed the enemies in line with this initial intention, assigning each of them distinct weak points to challenge the player in both movement and proficiency in hat throwing .
For the enemy rooms, I tried to arrange the interactive elements and obstacles strategically, compelling the player to adopt thoughtful positioning.
In addition to designing the enemy rooms, I worked on the puzzle rooms aimed at confirming the player's proficiency in hat throwing. Each puzzle incorporates elements or mechanics encountered in the enemy rooms, challenging the player to assimilate and apply them for progression. Until a final puzzle that teaches him the main mechanics of the boss.
Throughout this conceptual phase, I focused on creating plans to effectively represent and communicate my ideas. Then came the blockmesh phase during which I set up my levels and tested their efficiency in the engine. Once the blockmeshes were validated, the artists were able to release the art pass.
This project was a big management challenge for me. It was the first time that I led a team of very specialized people. I had to listen carefully to understand their ambitions. As well as a particularly rigorous communication to circulate the information from one to the other because many have a rather solitary temperament.
Despite creative differences stemming from strong personalities, we overcame them through open dialogue and iteration.
