While efforts to develop a more global perspective through hands-on experiences have been challenged with COVID-19, I have worked to enhance my global experience through virtual and in-person learning activities. A notable example of this is the University of Idaho's Cruise the World event, an opportunity to experience culture, food, and music from international students and staff. Through this event, I have interacted and learned about the varying experiences of Vandals from around the globe, which has demonstrated to me the necessitate to understand and respect the various cultures I interact with in both personal and professional settings.
I aimed to spend Summer 2020 studying abroad in Suzhou China to broaden my sense of engineering research being conducted globally and further my understand of how global collaboration is beneficial to engineers and researchers. Unfortunately, this trip was first postponed, and later cancelled as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Biomedical challenges, for example tendon injury and disease are global issues, and accordingly, it will take a diverse collaboration of researchers and engineers to overcome these significant challenges. I believe that an international experience and immersion into a foreign culture will propel me to become a better, more well rounded student, engineer, and researcher. I hope that spending time abroad will help me to gain a better grasp of how our global communities are challenged by, and must adapt to, the grand challenges of the 21st century.
