I started my undergrad not knowing what research I could participate in or what I was interested in. I knew I wanted to partake in research revolving around space. A unique NASA Virtual Academy opportunity came across my email my sophomore year. See the academy details below.
The NASA L'Space Virtual Academy level one was a 12-week program designed to engage students in team-based, rigorous, project-based STEM workforce development.
We were advised by the Lucy Mission team throughout both academies and learned about their mission to the Trojan asteroids.
I learned skills, knowledge, and competency in NASA mission protocols, procedures, and practices. We met virtually each week and learned from current NASA engineers and Researchers. Guest lecturers included Rob Manning (Chief Engineer at Jet Propulsion Labratories) and Dr. James Garvin (Chief Scientist at NASA Goddard).
We worked in teams to develop a Preliminary Design Review (PDR) using the protocols and procedures we learned about. The mission objective was to send a Life Finding Lander to Mars. We had to pick a location to land using JMARS, pick and create a payload, and address environmental hazards.
Those who completed the level one academy were invited to the level two academy where we built and tested our lander designs. The goal of this academy was to collaborate with a virtual team just like NASA does and conduct testing and analysis with team members scattered throughout various geographic locations.

I am part of a team that developed a project to bring anaerobic digester educational kits to classrooms to improve sustainability and waste management education. We competed at the NAE entrepreneurship competition and placed in the top 8 of 30 teams nationwide and were invited to the Global Engineering Summit in London (September 2019). We received a $18,000 Idaho Space Grant Consortium grant to further develop the project.
Upon completion and competency of skills and projects were approved, I recieved certificates for each level of the academy. This experience was very eye opening and insightful getting the opportunity to learn from the best.
