8. Education
We have written to various universities to know what will happen and what problems students will have after Brexit . Below we will report our requests and the universities’ replies.
I am writing because I wanted to express my concern about future consequences Brexit will have on my university studies. I am seventeen years old and I am an Italian student living and studying in Friuli Venezia Giulia, in Italy, and currently attending my third year at Liceo “Le Filandiere” in San Vito al Tagliamento (PN). When I finish secondary school, in 2020, I would like to attend Oxford University, if I get accepted, to study medicine. I have lived in the UK for nine years and my father, Antony Guy, has an English passport. However, I have not dual citizenship, for I was born in Italy, so I only have an Italian passport. I was wondering if it is possible for me to live and study in the UK as a UK citizen.
What will your policy be after Brexit? Will I be considered a EU student and charged extra tuition fees? Do you suggest to try to get a UK passport?
I very much look forward to receiving your response to my request.
Yours sincerely,
Francesca Guy
The reply from the University of Oxford:
Dear Francesca,
Thank you for your enquiry.
I very much understand your concerns, but I am afraid we are unable to predict what will happen as we are waiting for political decisions to be made. The University of Oxford is and intends to remain a thriving, cosmopolitan community of scholars and students united in our commitment to education and research. The UK referendum result will not change this; our students from all across the world are as warmly welcome as ever. But whether or not you would pay home fees or international fees is a political decision.
I have included some general information on fees status below. However, this might change in the future. Current information on the impact of the result of the referendum on student fees is available on the Oxford Students website
Citizenship itself does not determine your status for fees purposes. The student’s fee status is decided according to the facts of each case, looking at the student’s nationality or immigration status and where the student has been 'ordinarily resident' for the three-year period to 31 August prior to commencing a course at a British University. 'Ordinary residence' means 'residing in a country for a 'settled purpose'. In most cases, the main purpose of this residence must not have been education. The regulations the University uses to decide your status for fees purposes are the same as those used by all English universities. Further information on these regulations is available on our website
Independent information on fee classification can be obtained from the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA), an organisation that provides advice on fee and visa issues to international students, at www.ukcisa.org.uk
Please note that the application process is the same for all candidates, regardless of where they are from. Please see ox.ac.uk/apply I hope this is of help.
Kind regards

The reply from Exeter University:
Good morning,
Thank you for your email. Unfortunately we do not yet know what will happen with Brexit and if it will have an impact on tuition fees and the number on places on our medical programmes. We have to wait and see what happens with this. I cannot give advice on this as it is completely unknown.
There is a website which helps you to work out whether you will be considered an international student or a UK/EU student. See https://www.ukcisa.org.uk/
however I think you will be classed as an EU student. Just having a UK passport does not change your status as it takes into account where your parents live, work and pay taxes and many other factors.
There is a fact sheet on out medicine programme which you may find helpful see here. https://medicine.exeter.ac.uk/media/universityofexeter/medicalschool/documents/Bachelor_of_Medicine_Bachelor_of_Surgery-FAQ_v4.docx
I’ m sorry we cannot be more informative about Brexit at this time.
Best wishes
The answer from UCL:
Dear Francesca,
Thank you for your email.
Unfortunately, we do not yet know how Brexit will affect EU students in 2020. UCL has more information at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/iss/immigration-visa/eu-students and https://www.ucl.ac.uk/ucl-and-europe/ . These pages shall be updated with more information as it is reported.
I am sorry I cannot provide more information.
Kind regards,
Good morning,
I am Giada Cassin, I live in Pordenone in Italy. I attend high school "Le Filandiere" and I am in the third year.
In two years, when I finish high school I would like to study at York university. I would like to study Philosophy and History.
I would like to know if there could be problems for a European student to study in Britain.
I would like to find a place to live while I am studying, what will the cost be? Will I have to pay additional taxes? If I have to pay, will additional taxes be very expensive?
Thanks for the attention.
