- The Treaty of Lisbon is an international agreement that amends the two treaties which form the constitutional basis of the European Union
- Article 50 is part of the Treaty of Lisbon and it is a plan for any country that wishes to exit from the E.U.
- Any E.U. member state may decide to quit the E.U., but it must notify the European council and negotiate its withdrawal with the E.U.
- Within two years they must reach an agreement
- The exiting state cannot take part in any internal discussions about its departure
- The Treaties will cease to be applied to the state that wants to draw out when the agreement becomes law or after two years from the exit notification
- If the withdrawn state wishes to become a part of the E.U. again, the request will be submitted to the procedure according to article 49.
