Mission:
Conlanging is the making of constructed languages, examples of which include Esperanto, Klingon, Tolkein's Elvish languages, and High Valyrian among others. Our fundamental mission is to provide space for conlangers at UChicago to meet, discuss, to present their work, and to promote conlanging to the wider community of UChicago and the Hyde Park neighborhood.
History:
In the eighth week of Winter 2023, Alice and Ryan, Ministers Emeriti, along with a few others met for the first time to hold a preliminary, technically not even the first, meeting for what would become the UChicago Constructed Languages Society, or UChiConlangs. By happenstance, an attendee of that preliminary meeting, Timo (current Minister of the Treasury), spotted a friend and soon-to-be founding member Vivienne Zhang across CSIL. From her, we discovered that not only was there a conlang class offered by the Linguistics department of which we were hitherto unaware,* but also its students were planning on forming a conlang club themselves. Thus, we were able to merge our two preclub formations into one larger and stronger organization. To this day, we carry forward the commitment to one constructed languages society for all of UChicago, welcoming members of every stripe and interest every year.
*Dr. Sam Gray, who was the one offering and teaching the class, is no longer a grad student/teaching fellow at UChicago, so this class is sadly no longer offered. He was however there to grant us his support in formation of the club.
