Service to Our Nation" was the theme of this year's Veterans Day program at Twin Oaks Elementary on Tuesday. Students, faculty, and staff honored veterans with a presentation of colors by the Belaire Magnet High School JROTC color guard, salutes, poems, songs, and a touching slideshow recognizing veterans from Twin Oaks Elementary families.
The guest speaker, SSG Merqueldra La Cour, a 27-year veteran of the U.S. Army and JROTC Instructor at Belaire Magnet High School, spoke with students about the importance of service to the community. She shared that she learned discipline, service to the community, the value of learning, and leadership during her time in the military.
Space Race Moon Rock Processors
Purpose: To study the handling, excavation, and properties of lunar materials, such as their mechanical and particle-size characteristics.
Moon Rock Processors :Scientists use powerful processors, including supercomputers, to run complex physics-based models that replicate the conditions of space. These models help understand everything from the formation of the moon to the behavior of lunar soil (regolith) during landing and resource extraction.
Fifth-grade students explored the historical significance of the Magna Carta through an engaging classroom reenactment. By stepping into the roles of King John, the nobles, and other key figures, students deepened their understanding of how this 1215 document laid the foundation for modern democratic principles such as limited government, rule of law, and individual rights. This hands-on activity supported social studies standards focused on the development of political ideas and institutions, helping students connect the Magna Carta to the evolution of constitutional government in the United States.
First graders had a great time at the Knock Knock Museum!
Twin Oaks received a grant from TCEnergy and KIDSPARK Education that purchased 11 new awesome KidSpark STEM Pathways Lab Kits. This week 3rd and 4th graders began learning how to use the new kits. Students learned how to put pieces together, how to use a tool to take them apart, and began building! The students' first STEM challenges were to create the 1st letter of their first name using the new STEM kits, and how to build a simple bridge structure. We are very excited about having these great new materials! Thank you TCEnergy.
3rd - 5th grade students really enjoyed learning about liquid density in the STEM lab this week. They created liquids with different density levels so that when poured into a test-tube, the liquids stayed separated creating a rainbow in a test-tube. They also practiced following precise directions, lab rules, and lab procedures so they know how to keep a safe environment and achieve accurate results when they are doing activities in the STEM lab.
Success is in the Support! As we continue our visits to schools this year, like last year, we recognize that the support provided will greatly enhance our students' success. We want to celebrate the dedication of our faculty and staff and the essential work they do every day in support of our students' education.
Daring to be GREAT is a call to action to remind us of our collective responsibility to give all children an unforgettable learning experience from early childhood to graduation and ensure preparedness to enter the world as respectful, prepared, and globally ready citizens. #DareToBeGreat #WeAreEBR #EBRSchools
