Please join us on October 20, 2024, 1:00-4:00 pm at Olivet Congregational Church.
Kate will not be with us; however, we have many talented members who will be sharing their
talents and leading us in a wonderful afternoon of music making.
We will start our playing workshop giving some extra thought to how we play our instrument.
New member Vickie Starbuck, formerly of Columbus Ohio, will lead us in working on beautiful
tone production and managing our breath as we play.
Following ‘breath and tone,’ our afternoon has two themes: “Locally composed” and “Music for
Recorder Orchestra.” Music for recorder orchestra simply means music for more than the usual
SATB – four parts. The grand sound of 25 players at our September meeting inspired us to seek
out music for larger group
I hope many of you will join us for the October workshop and invite your recorder-playing
friends. The proposed music, with links to view some of the actual music are below.

Proposed music for October 20 includes: (click on music titles for link to actual music)
* James Chaudoir of Oshkosh, Wisconsin has graciously donated two pieces to our guild.
They are arranged for double choir with simple rhythms and they sound fantastic. The
pieces are Echo Song by Orlando di Lasso and Duo Seraphim by Jacob Handl. Parts are available for Duo Seraphim.
You can hear these pieces performed as their original vocal format here.
*We may sample from Four Irish Airs arranged by Marg Hall for Recorder Orchestra - Peacock Press 395
(SATB Great-bass and Contra bass)
*Abensegen -(edition Moeck 3327, arranged by Irmhild Beutler) an arrangement of the
Children’s Prayer from the Humperdinck opera Hansel & Gretel for 2 sopranos, 4 altos,
3 tenors, 4 basses, great-bass and Contrabass
Our local composers include Mary Breslin, Alex Carlson, Susan Lindvall and Laura Simms.
They have arranged a wide variety of music. You can check out Mary Breslin’s music free
online at her website. We propose to play Mary’s “Genial March.” Susan’s music is published
and available through Honeysuckle Music though she has said she may bring some newly
composed work to us. Alex will be leading “Peace I Leave with You.” Alex and Laura’s music
are presently unpublished.
During our social break, we will also have our “donated music” annual sale. You can pick up
some music donated to us and make a donation to the guild for it; suggested donation $1-2 per
piece or $5 for an anthology/ book collection.
Lastly, the Twin Cities Early Music Festival does have a concert scheduled at 4 pm at St. Mary’s
Episcopal Church, which is walking distance from Olivet. This concert does not feature recorder
players but some may wish to attend. It is titled English Elegance.
Therefore, to facilitate any who wish to attend the concert and to use available rehearsal time in the Olivet Sanctuary,
the time from 3:30-4:00 will be used to rehearse for our upcoming participation in the worship service at Olivet Church on Sunday October 27.
Performance Opportunity!
We’ve been asked to contribute music to the regular church service at Olivet on Sunday October
27. All are welcome to join us. The Monday group has been sampling music and will both select
music and assign parts by October 1.
The service starts at 10:00 am and we’ve been asked to contribute three pieces – a prelude, a
piece during offertory, and a postlude. These pieces are mainly being rehearsed at Jean’s
Monday Group. The proposed selections include hymn arrangements by Susan Lindvall and
Laura Simms and a Renaissance work. If you are interested in this performance opportunity,
please contact Jean Allison Olson (jean@honeysucklemusic.com) or Barbara Rice
(TCRecorderGuild@gmail.com) for the music.
If needed, we will arrange an evening rehearsal.
