Twin Cities Recorder Guild Workshop with Tish Berlin
May 9, 2026
By a Woman Writ: Celebrating Women Composers from the 16th Century to Today, with Tish Berlin
Revel in a sampling of the wealth of repertoire by women composers ranging from Leonora d’Este to Florence Price. We’ll choose a few pieces to dig into, and play through as many of the rest of these pieces as we can in a day: an ethereal motet on the Sicut lilium text by Leonora d’Este, daughter of Lucrezia Borgia and a nun, a madrigal by Maddalena Casulana, one of the first published woman composers, an instrumental sinfonia by Leonora Duarte, member of a family of musicians who immigrated from Portugal to Antwerp, a beautiful 5-part motet by the Bolognese nun Lucrezia Orsini Vizzana, a madrigal by the Augustinian nun Vittoria Aleotti, an evocative hymn to the evening by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, and beautifully-atmospheric contributions from the 20th and 21st century by Florence Price and Frances Blaker.
