After a furious finish to the end of the season, Team 4 continued their strong play into the playoffs, defeating Team 1 112 - 104, marking their 3rd championship in the past 4 seasons. The score was tight after the 1st day, as Team 1, led by Dave Maxwell and his birdie on #9, took a slim lead of 55-53. The players were thrown for a loop on Tuesday. The greens on the front 9 had just been aerated, so the starter sent our players out to tackle the strange back 9. It seemed to rattle both teams, with the average score on the short par 4 tenth nearly a double bogey (5.94)! Rico Conti led Team 4 with a birdie on #14 while the military planes practiced touch and gos. Congratulations Team 4!
The standings were tight the last few weeks of the season. Team 2 and team 4 traded the lead a couple times, but all 3 teams (including team 3) were there with a chance going into week 18. Team 4 led team 2 by just 3 points and team 3 by just 4. Tim Santos and Dan Schettler set the tone early, combining for 23 points, 1 better than team 3's primary grouping. The lead now at 5, Eric Lyster and Steve Moriarty were able to score a couple points better than Bob Page and Jung Lee of team 3. With a lead of 7 points, it all came down to Lois Nakayama and Mark Westall. Team 3 needed a lopsided loss for team 4's final pairing, but it was not to be. Westall and Nakayama combined for 20 points and cemented team 4 in the top spot for the 2nd half of the season. They will face Team 1 in next week's two day playoff. Good luck everyone!
With just a 1 point lead over team 2 going into the final week, Team 1 steamed over team 4 with a massive showing, easily outpacing team 2, who just happened to put in their best week of the season so far. Nate Sanchez and Bruce Campbell scored excellent rounds of 45 and 43 to lead the charge with 14 points each for their team. Congratulations Team 1! Who will join them in the playoffs this August?
Bob Page needed just the one swing to finish #7 this week. Congratulations Bob! Dan, John, and Neal told me they are thirsty.
The greens were like putting on ceramic in week 1. In week 2, they had softened up to a more manageable level. Someone must have let the grounds crew know that we are not in Georgia.
Watch out for danger noodles.
After the first cancelled season due to war on a virus, we are back. Covid protocol is still in effect, with social distancing requested at all times and mask use around the clubhouse where it is more crowded. Let's get out there and make some birdies.
Since points are awarded to twosomes and the Top Gun celebrates individual greatness, we have also adopted a new Top Gun format. This is a modified Stableford format, where you earn (or lose) points base on your play relative to par on each hole, adjusting for handicap. In this format, your unadjusted handicap is used and more than 1 stroke per hole is possible. For instance, if you have a 10 handicap, you would get one stroke per hole except for the 3rd (hardest hole) when you get two strokes. Using the same scores from above, the sample scorecard below shows how each player earns points. The average number of points per round is used to rank all the players (min: 5 rounds) and the top 8 qualify for the tournament.
