COVID-19 Crisis

We were inspired to found the Tupelo Mutual Aid Project amid growing fears regarding the COVID-19 strain of the coronavirus. Our little town has never faced a crisis quite like this one and its effects can already be seen in the community. The place to come together is here. The time is now.

Areas of Need

Some schools and businesses in our community have preemptively altered their practices as recommended by state and health officials. More are likely to follow. That means we have neighbors who have been or are soon to be impacted by this crisis. Job closures may result in lost wages. School closures may create a need for emergency childcare. Dormitory closures may leave students without stable housing, as has been the case at nearby universities. People already need our help and that need will only increase as the virus runs its course.

Community members can see how the COVID-19 Crisis has impacted Northeast Mississippi on our Crisis Updates page, where we will post notices of closure and postponement, as well as local news stories.

Our community is already developing resources in response to the crisis. You can find a list of these initiatives on our Crisis Resources page, along with suggestions for safety, wellness, and what to do when you're stuck at home.

Community Safety

The Tupelo Mutual Aid Project endeavors to contribute to the wellbeing of community members affected by COVID-19, but we must also remain vigilant in minimizing the spread of the virus. In anticipation of the need to organize assistance for people exposed to COVID-19, we ask that all community members follow these Safety Practices for COVID-19 Mutual Aid Groups in addition to the CDC Prevention Guidelines.

How can I help?

Keep an eye on the TMAP Community Spreadsheet, offer help where you can, and keep us apprised of any unacknowledged areas of need that you may notice. Most importantly, follow the CDC Prevention Guidelines and Safety Practices for COVID-19 Mutual Aid Groups to minimize the spread of the virus.

COVID-19 Signs and Symptoms

COVID-19 symptoms may include fever, cough or shortness of breath. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical attention, especially if you or anyone you know has been exposed to the virus, traveled to a major city, visited a travel hub such as an airport or bus station, or attended a mass gathering in the last two weeks.
