Dyslexia = Any reading or spelling issues.
The word Dyslexia is a Greek word and refers to any reading or spelling difficulties, some research is indicating the possibility that children who experience Dyslexia may simply be right brain dominant. New research suggests that children with dyslexia may see and learn three dimensionally and operate largely from their right hemisphere where skill sets are thinking outside the box and visual memory and creativity .
Indications of Dyslexia can be left handedness, letter or number reversals, poor reading and spelling skills, lack of concentration, difficulty remembering and messy handwriting ( Dysgraphia) . Dyslexia also runs in families.
A poor Auditory Sequential Memory is the key component of Dyslexia and negatively impacts reading and spelling skills , it is the sequencing memory a student needs to be able to remember which order letters need to be placed in to form words correctly . At school Dyslexia materialises in poor reading and spellings skills and a lack of concentration - this is where parents first realise there is a problem.
It is estimated that 20% of the population have dyslexia, schools are successfully teaching most of the children, but there are still too many children missing out on vital literacy skills and leaving school illiterate.
Using Multi Sensory and visual imagery techniques to bypass the auditory sequential memory is a very effective way to correct dyslexia, working this way has a positive knock on effect on students confidence as the student is learning new skills and a new approach that works, it is fantastic for building self esteem and helping students improve their general literacy skills, bearing in mind children are naturally creative so learning creative techniques to overcome literacy difficulties can be a very enjoyable and rewarding experience.
