Winston "Spree" Simon born in 1930 was a significant figure from Trinidad and Tobago, known for his contributions as an inventor, and development of the steelpan. Simon's work played a pivotal role in the evolution of the steel drum or steelpan, which is now T&T National Instrument. Simon was one of the early pioneers who helped transform metal containers, such as oil drums, into melodic instruments. His efforts in tuning and refining the steelpan helped it gain recognition as a legitimate musical instrument. Simon's innovative work laid the foundation for developing various types of Steel-pans, each with its unique pitch and range.
George Bailey was a renowned figure in Trinidadian history and is often remembered as a celebrated carnival bandleader and designer. His innovative designs in the 1950s and 1960s transformed Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival, bringing a new level of artistry and creativity to the event. His work helped elevate the festival to international acclaim. Bailey was known for his elaborate and thematic costume designs, which often drew inspiration from history, culture, and mythology. His contributions to the Carnival tradition in T&T left a lasting legacy that influenced generations of designers and artists.
Tubal Uriah "Buzz" Butler was a prominent Trinidadian labour leader and social activist. Born on January 21, 1897, in Grenada, he is best known for his role in the labour movement unrest in Trinidad and Tobago during the 1930s and 1940s, which played a crucial role in the fight for workers' rights and social justice. Butler initially worked in the oil industry, where he witnessed firsthand the harsh conditions faced by workers. He became a passionate advocate for their rights, leading strikes and protests that challenged the then-colonial establishment.
Slinger Francisco, better known by his stage name The Mighty Sparrow, is one of Trinidad and Tobago's most iconic Calypsonian. Known as the "Calypso King of the World," The Mighty Sparrow has had a profound influence on Calypso music and Caribbean culture, He has received the Order of the Republic of T&T (ORTT) - T&T Chaconia Medal (CM) and Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE)
Peter Minshall is a renowned Trinidadian artist and Mas-man (a designer and creator of costumes for Carnival). He is celebrated for his innovative and theatrical approach to Carnival, transforming it from a traditional street festival into a dynamic form of visual and performance art. Minshall's work has gained international acclaim, making him one of the most influential figures in the world of Carnival and beyond.
Arthur Andrew Cipriani (1875–1945) was a prominent Trinidadian labour leader and politician who played a key role in the early labour movement in Trinidad and Tobago. He is often remembered as one of the founding figures of the country's labour movement and an advocate for workers' rights and social justice.
Eugene Chen (also known as Chen Youren, 陳友仁 ) was born on July 2, 1878, in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago to a Chinese father and a Creole mother. Eugene was also married to a Black Trinidadian and they had 8 children. He was a significant figure in Chinese history when he migrated there. He joined Sun Yat-sen the Father of the Republic of China in the overthrow of China's last ruling imperial Empire during the early 20th century. Chen became the first Foreign Minister of the Republic of China in 1920.
Albert Maria Gomes (25 March 1911 – 13 January 1978) was a Trinidadian unionist, politician, and writer. He was of Portuguese descent and was the first Chief Minister of Trinidad and Tobago during Colonial Era. In the 1940s T&T Blacks did not have a leader, thus they did not have a voice. Gomes became that leader with great detriment to himself. Blacks was just 40% of the population and Gomes was despised by most of the rest of the population for his stand in securing voting rights for all, regardless of their social status.
Dr. Alfred E. Waddell from T&T was a Physician and one of the first Black people to obtain a Medical Degree (MD) in North America. Before the 19th century Physicians were regulated but not Registered. The most popular way to treat most ailments then was by Bloodletting. Barbers were the most popular. The Red and White stripes of the Barber pole originated from this practice of Bloodletting and the sign in front the Barbershop indicates that they was also a medical person
Anthony Norman Sabga was born in Syria in 1923, the second of three sons of Norman Sabga and his wife. They were among the last of the Christian immigrants from the former Ottoman Empire, fleeing from religious persecution to come to Trinidad in 1930. His father opened a small business but Anthony decided to strike out on his own against his father’s wishes and he formed his own company called Standard Distributors. He then formed ANSA McAl becoming one of the largest conglomerates in the Caribbean.
