OUR FOUNDER
Rasheed Sultan-Khan was the last of eleven children to Ogreen and Sultan Khan. He grew up on Coffee Street, San Fernando, and attended Grant School and Naparima College. His love for seniors began at age 13 when, during World War 2, he took seniors to Air Raid Shelters. After graduating from high school, he joined the family business and then went into his own wholesale business. He won an island-wide tenor singing competition and was a frequent guest artiste on the Sam Ghany radio show on Sundays.
Rasheed went to England in 1959 where he pursued studies in accounting. He returned to T&T and married Feeroza (née Khan) in 1963. He is blessed with six (6) children, nine (9) grandchildren and two (2) great-grands.
He immigrated to Canada with his wife and five children in 1973 and the next day, landed a job at the publishing company, Thomas Allen and Sons. When the company closed, he returned to school furthering his studies in Finance & Accounting at Seneca College. He was then employed at The Chase Manhattan Bank until his retirement. After retirement, he pursued courses in Property Law, Real Estate and Life Insurance to get his certification licence.
Rasheed had Quadruple bypass surgery and during his stay in the hospital, he had a dream to bring T&T citizens together, to socialize away from their homes. In 1996 that dream came true with the formation of the Trinidad and Tobago 50plus & Seniors Association of Canada (Ontario Chapter).
Rasheed admitted sacrificing his family life for the T&T 50Plus & Senior's Association. Whenever he was at home, he was on the phone 24/7, recruiting members and following up on referrals. Anywhere he went, he had membership forms rolled up in his pocket. This was especially true at parties as he was always promoting 50Plus and inviting Trinbagonians he met to come to meetings. At events held in parks, he would have his wife, along with Yolanda Russell and Malcom Riley walk around the park, sometimes in the blazing sun looking for Trinidadians to join the Association. Rasheed is proud of 50Plus progress over the many years and he hopes that the Association continues to be alive and vibrant under the stability of the various Executive Committee Members.
Rasheed thanks the Executive & Program Team for hosting events via ZOOM during the COVID-19 Lockdown. He appreciates the love and passion that the members demonstrated via ZOOM. He has made a special appeal that in the years to come, prayers will not be taken out from meetings and the singing of the Canadian & T&T National Anthems continues at events. This is his wish when he is not on this earth anymore. He would also like to take this opportunity to thank all for the support and love given to him.
Rashheed Sultan-Khan died on the 15th of April 2023, he was 95 years.
