Membership Pins (stars) are given out every year and represent the year the scout has stayed in girl scouting. The different colored discs represent the scout's current level. Several sections, including the older scouts, give out the membership stars at the halfway point in December. Others wait to give them out at the end of our scouting year in May. The reason I changed to December is due to my 12th graders. They graduate high school in May and can't wear the girl scout vest once they bridge into adult scouting. It made better sense to award the current year's membership pin in December to afford these 12th graders the opportunity to at least wear the pin on their vest for the last half of their scouting year. FOR THOSE SCOUTS WHO ARE EXPECTED TO BRIDGE IN MAY, WE ALL WAIT TO AWARD MEMBERSHIP PINS AT OUR BRIDGING CEREMONY IN MAY. The reason for this is that the Council offers us Bridging Packets which include the bridging fun patch, bridging certificate and membership pin all in one packet which we purchase. So, those scouts who bridge in May will receive their Membership Pins in May as part of the Bridging Packet.
