Assortment

Product >>> Assortment

Basic Definitions

Product assortment means the different types of products (goods or services) that a business provides to consumers.

The main characteristics of the assortment:

  • Breadth: the total number of product lines a company produces or a retailer carries.
  • Length: the number of products in a particular product chain or line.
  • Depth: the different versions of the same product that may exist in each product line.
  • Consistency: the degree to which the product lines relate to each other.

The more varied (broader and deeper) assortment, the more users will have the opportunity to find the product that meets their needs.

For example, the following product lines can be presented in a specialized shop: "tea", "coffee", "sweets", "dishes". Different types of product can be presented in each product line. For example, dozens of tea sorts (black, green, fruit, etc.) could be represented in the "tea" product line. In the "coffee" product line, the different roast types of coffee or coffee from different countries can be represented.

problem (contradiction)

The assortment should be narrow to focus on the production and sale of a minimum number of product types.
