Welcome to TRIDENT, a division of the Metropolitan Police Service with the aims of targeting gun crime, reducing gun crime and ensuring the ongoing safety of citizens within the city.
TRIDENT gained recognition for its ongoing collaboration with gangs, and its clear focus on high calibre crimes such as murder and firearm offenses. The division regularly patrols with large manpower focusing on addressing key established areas such as armed store robberies as well as drug deals bringing down gangs within the city.
TRIDENT operates with a clear focus on engaging with individuals that have been involved in criminal activities to secure information and cooperation to hold criminals accountable. The collaboration between the individual and the TRIDENT unit can result in a reduction in jail time and/or fine depending on the level of support and information provided leading to arrests. A case from 2007 involves an individual known as 'Spyder,' facing a potential 16-year prison term for a series of criminal charges. Opting for cooperation with TRIDENT, Spyder contributed information in exchange for a more lenient sentence. It is noteworthy that such options, extended by the police force, are rare in the UK and typically reserved for the most severe cases.
