Classic pine forest planted on undulating to moderately steep sand-dune terrain, with areas of intricate contour detail. Underfoot in most areas is fairly clean, with very good to excellent runnability, but some areas have denser vegetation or branches and undergrowth that reduce running speed.
Patches of denser vegetation that reduce visibility and slow running speed, such as pampas grass (“cutty grass”) or kanuka, are mapped with darker shades of green. Areas where visibility is good but ground material slows running speed, such as branches or waist-high lupins, are mapped as green stripe.

Access to the forest is via Slater Road, off South Head Road. Follow event signage from Slater Road to reach parking. Parking is approximately 20 minutes from Slater Road.
The landowners on Slater Road have kindly allowed forest access through their property, provided all speed limits are strictly observed. Please keep your speed to 20 kph while travelling through the landowner property to help ensure continued access for future events. Once in the forest the speed limit is 50 kph.
The route to the arena passes through an embargoed area for King’s Birthday 2026. You must not stop or exit your vehicle along the route until you reach parking.
Please ensure your headlights are on at all times while driving in the forest.

All courses cross the forest access road to the event and a public access 4WD track that leads to the beach. There will be signs warning drivers to slow down and watch out for runners. Visibility on the forest access road is good. Visibility on the 4WD track is more limited, however traffic is expected to be light and slow moving. Competitors should take care when crossing these roads if they see or hear an approaching vehicle.
In the event of a fire or other emergency the normal evacuation procedures will apply. If you hear the repeated sound of car horns, travel immediately towards the sound to the road and wait to be picked up or to receive further instructions.
There is a public event following the long distance trial. Please be aware that additional controls will be in the terrain.
