I have traveled to the island Kauai several times. On some of the trips, I camped. On other trips I have stayed in hotels. Sometimes I stayed in hotels and camped on the same trip.
On my most recent trip, we camped at Anini Beach for one night, camped at Salt Pond Beach for 6 nights, and then stayed in a hotel on our final night. It only cost $3 per person each night to camp - you need to reserve a spot at the Kauai County website before you go! I put more information to help you plan your trip and put pictures and video further down this page - scroll down the screen to see more.
Here is my Kauai video of my most recent trip:

We really enjoyed our camping trips to Kauai!

We rented a car and ate out in restaurants - there are many excellent and fairly inexpensive locally owned restaurants - eating in these helps support the local economy and they are much more tasty than the corporate owned hotel restraints!
Some people camping didn't rent a car but took the bus around - I would recommend renting a car for at least some of the time on the island.
Sometimes it gets windy at salt pounds and sometimes an awesome and loud Kauai Uke reggae band plays a bit late at night so be prepared and enjoy! Some friendly Kauai islanders even offered me some food from their barbeque while the party was going on! Usually the wind dies down at night at salt ponds - however, one night that wasn't the case so the sleeping wasn't that great that night. You might want to check the wind forecast for nights and if a Kona storm (from the west) is moving in, camp on the other side of the island. Met folks from all over the world here - I fiddled for some folks from Ireland and others from Quebec Canada.
I have some pictures from my latest trip to Kauai Hawaii below - I have all those pictures and more with description of where the picture was taken at the following blog post: https://kauaiwithdave.blogspot.com/2024/02/kauai-pictures.html Be sure to check out the blog post to help you with trip planning!
