By removing parallel parking spaces on Parker Street and replacing them with bike lanes, we hope to improve bike safety, thus encouraging more people to get out and bike. In addition to bettering personal health among Boston's residents, promoting bicycling will also have positive effects on the environment by decreasing the city's overall carbon footprint. Furthermore, we hope that the lack of parking spaces will encourage daily commutators to rely more on public transportation and biking as a way of getting to and from work in the city, which will also help to decrease congestion during rush hour.
Though we hope that removing the parallel parking lanes will have an overall positive effect on the community, it also has some potential drawbacks. The main issue is that this creates a lack of parking. This may cause problems for drivers commuting into the city because it might force them to park farther away from their work than if they had parked on Parker Street.
