As engineers, our mission is to make Boston a safe, reliable, and pleasing place for pedestrians, motor vehicles, and bicycle riders, as mentioned before. In order to achieve this mission, we have to solve the major problems that Boston has been facing for years. To begin, Boston is very busy throughout the day, especially during rush hours. Many workers and tourists enter, park, and exit Boston. As a result, previous engineers created parallel parking spaces for those people to park their motor vehicles. However, we have recently noticed that parallel parking spaces have taken up valuable space in the city of Boston. To solve this problem, we plan to replace parallel parking spaces with bicycle lanes and remove unnecessary space to accommodate pedestrians and bikers who use the roads and sidewalks.
We were originally thinking of creating a shared car and bike lane because it was more spacious. However, it would have made traffic more congested by forcing cars to slow down because of the bikes. Furthermore, a shared lane would have been more dangerous than a separated bike lane, putting the safety of the bikers at risk. Instead, we chose to focus on creating a separated bike lane.
