Student Opportunities 

Students earn 3.0 college credits a semester from UH Hilo and can finish our program with 12-15 free college credits. Students also earn 1 high school credit every semester. Learn more here.

Students visit UH Hilo once per semester to become familiar with campus and start envisioning their life as a college student. Learn more here.

Learn from interpreters and translators who are doing a wide variety of jobs leveraging their multilingual skills. Guest speakers join our classes virtually to share about their experiences. Past guest speakers have included court + medical interpreters as well as book translators.

As part of the Year 2 course students attend a Basic Court Interpreter's Workshop. Students can then take the English and Ethics exam to become Level 1 certified Interpreters. Interpreters can then interpret in schools, courts, and more. Students who are in Year 1 and are 17+ can also attend.  🎉Congrats to our newest interpreter!🎉 The test is offered in June and December; past and current interns will receive a scholarship that pays for the entire cost of the exam.

Graduating seniors can earn the Seal of Biliteracy, a Hawai'i state graduation honor recognizing multilingual graduates of Hawai'i schools. Seniors can learn more here + ask their school's coordinator to learn how to apply. Kealakehe students can reach out to Ms. Lalagos directly. Applications for this graduation honor open every Fall.

Students at Kealakehe High School looking to take the AP Spanish Langauge and Culture exam can join an after school class to get practice and prepare. Students who speak French, Italian, German, Chinese, and Japanese who are also interested can email Ms. Lalagos for details on how they can get support as well. Colleges offer between 3-12 credits for passing scores on AP language exams (varies by school-- look it up here).

Mentor elementary school students working on translation projects at their schools.  Volunteer positions are seasonal and open based on feeder school requests. Please check out the current applications here.

Graduating Seniors who have been an intern of our program can apply for a $1,000 scholarship to further their studies. Check out our past awardees here. Curious about the application? Check out last year's application here. Applications open in March and are awarded in May.

Students are eligible to apply for an internship position after they have completed LING102 with a B or better. Interns translate materials for non-profit organizations and schools in our community. Interns are mentored by adults who speak their languages and are paid for their work based on their experience level. Meetings are held in the evening on zoom, and in addition to translation work, interns also receive coaching in resume and professional skill development. Applications are now open and due on September 1st, 2026.  Internship applications reopen each semester.

Learn how to create dynamic audio and video podcasts from experts in the field and get paid ($200)! Interns will create 3 podcasts in non-English languages with mentor support, including a video podcast with Nā Leo TV that will run on television!
