Westport Stadium

1951 to 1963

 Westport Stadium, converted from a baseball stadium built for the Baltimore Elite Giants, was located on Old Annapolis Road between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Patapsco Avenue. The track was opened for stock car racing on April 5, 1951, and operated under NASCAR sanction on Saturday nights along with some mid-week specials including Midgets, Grand National Short Track division and the Circuit of Champions Convertible Late Models.

 Ed Otto, one of NASCAR's top men and promoter of races throughout the Northeast, was the man in charge along with his weekly Race Director, Bill Heiserman. He built a 1/5 mile clay oval around the existing baseball diamond. With stadium-style seating, there was not a bad seat in the house. The action was always close and exciting, with fender-to-fender contact in every race.

 After 13 years of operation, the track held its last stock car race on Aug. 10, 1963. Other events such as a Demolition Derby, Autocross, Semi-Pro football and soccer were held a few more years before it was demolished.
