The Lose Tour

The Lose Tour in Brianza

152 km by bicycle, with a further 10 intermediate ring routes: to discover Brianza visiting the places illustrated by Federico and Carolina Lose.

In the beautiful summer of 1822, the painters of German-Prussian origin Friedrich and Karoline Lohse (later Italianized Federico and Carolina Lose), departing from Milan - where they lived - embarked on a pictorial journey towards the hills and mountains of Brianza, in order to portray the pleasant landscapes of that somewhat mysterious territory just outside the door.

Having already lived in Milan in via San Damiano 122 for 20 years, the two Lose (he is a painter, she is an engraver) with that trip intended to create a series of prints of places they had certainly heard about several times, that is, those landscapes of the hilly Brianza which began to become the place of choice for the nobility and the nascent Milanese bourgeoisie.

The prints made and published at their expense the following year, with the title Pictorial Journey in the Brianza mountains, became perhaps the first case of great media success in the Lombardy-Veneto region: they literally sold like hot cakes and ended up decorating the walls of the wealthiest Milanese houses and contributing more than any other publication (in my opinion much more than the famous Journal du voyage dans la Brianza by Stendhal, dated 1818) to create the myth of the short trip, the holiday residence outside the city and perhaps the possession of a real Villa of Delizia in Brianza.

To worthily celebrate this fabulous journey through the Brianza hills carried out by Federico and Carolina two centuries ago, the possible itinerary to be proposed as a new pictorial journey was studied, ideally to be carried out by bicycle, on the less busy roads, almost all paved and with little dirt road. , to allow as easy a ride as possible for those wishing to try this 150 km long Brianza outing. Those who made it in one day, however, can still complete the route in a weekend, or break the journey by bicycle by stopping in Erba, where the presence of the Northern Railways allows the transfer of the bike to the starting point in Milan or neighboring ones. Or, again, cycling shorter loops within the main Tour that the cyclist with little time available will certainly find useful.
