My teaching philosophy takes on a rather Constructivist approach. I believe it is important to develop students' knowledge based on previous learning and to acknowledge that all learners come from different backgrounds and will have different learning experiences. It is important to acknowledge this as these prior experiences will ultimately affect how the student learns in the classroom environment.
With this said, my teaching philosophy is that I believe that a teacher is morally obligated to enter the classroom with an open mind toward each of their students. A teacher should also acknowledge that each student has different needs and requirements and remain an active member of the classroom.
In this sense, being an active member simply means being aware of what students are doing/experiencing and participating in activities that they are expected to complete. If students have to fill out a worksheet that is unrecognizable I believe it is first important to demonstrate what type of work is expected.
Teaching is a process of learning for every individual involved (students, teachers, parents, staff, community members, etc) and should be respected as such. Teachers should be willing to learn more about their students to foster a positive learning environment.
