The competency that I developed the most this semester is Competency six which is managing how the class operates. At the beginning of my practicum placement, I experienced a variety of challenges with understanding how to organize and manage the class in a way that would ultimately promote learning. This semester I had the opportunity to learn new management methods such as:
Asking students "all set?" and waiting for the response "You bet!"
Saying "clap clap, hands on lap" -> When this is said students know that they need to halt current activities and their attention needs to be redirected to the front.
Using saying starting with "If you can hear me" -> an example of this is "If you can hear me show me moose antlers". When this is said, the teacher can gauge attentiveness by paying attention to who is doing the action that was asked.
These are all useful tools that will be incorporated into my own future classroom.
