What is Art/Photo Voice?

For this project, we incorporate Art/Photo Voice through the use of photos or artwork and images to capture aspects of our environments and experiences, and to share them with others visually and narratively. The main aims are to help us record and reflect on experiences in our worlds and communities, about conditions in our everyday lives. The project encourages critical consciousness through choosing, discussing, and reflecting on the photographs/artwork so we can come to a clearer understanding of social and individual circumstances and the forces that shape them such as structure, systems, economics, socio-political, and social constructions. This project enhances classroom learning and conversations by visually bringing in our lives through multiple mediums. It is a creative, fun way to view perhaps familiar scenes and people; to change our perceptions of the worlds we inhabit every day - to see what we don't see, to feel these scenes, and to see what we already see through a new lens.
