Future projects
The Ithon Project is a community archaeology initiative that invites volunteers, schools, and local residents to explore one of Mid Wales’ most fascinating discoveries—the Llandrindod Logboat. This ancient vessel, crafted hundreds of years ago, provides a rare glimpse into the lives of our ancestors who travelled on the rivers in the Welsh landscape.
Through fieldwork, public engagement, and digital storytelling, the project connects people to their shared heritage while developing practical archaeological and heritage skills.
Explore and record the archaeological landscape around the logboat site.
Engage volunteers in excavation, research, heritage interpretation, and experimental archaeology.
Promote skills and learning through hands-on training and workshops.
Celebrate the story of the Llandrindod logboat through crafting an accurate replica, exhibitions and online experiences.
We’re inviting local people of all ages and backgrounds to join the project as volunteers. You can:
Take part in real archaeological excavations and surveys.
Learn skills in recording, finds processing, and green woodworking as a mediaeval boat builder.
Help design and deliver exhibitions and community events.
Contribute stories, photos, or memories about local heritage.
No experience is necessary — training and supervision are provided by Timescape Archaeology’s professional team.
Fieldwork: Hands-on excavation and survey of the logboat site.
Workshops & Training: Learn archaeological skills and replicate the logboat with traditional skills and digital documentation.
Public Events: Talks, guided walks, and open days.
Digital Heritage: Online exhibitions, 3D models, and learning resources.
Exhibition: A display of discoveries at the Llandrindod Wells Museum.
Join the volunteer team building a full-scale replica of the original logboat using traditional tools and methods. This hands-on experience will explore ancient boatbuilding techniques, from selecting and shaping timber to hollowing and finishing the vessel. The completed replica will feature in public events and on the water at Llandrindod Lake for demonstration and education.
The project isn’t just about the past — it’s about people today. By uncovering the story of the Llandrindod logboat, we celebrate the creativity, resilience, and identity of communities in Mid Wales, past and present.
Together, we’ll:
Protect and document an important piece of Welsh heritage.
Inspire pride and curiosity in local history.
Strengthen community connections through shared discovery.
