Students begin the project learning the (4) basic forms and how they are the building blocks of creating all observable complex objects.

Basic Forms Still Life
Students are then tasked with creating three distinct basic form still life setups using objects provided by the teacher. They are asked to arrange, light, and photograph thoughtful, compositionally sound still lifes. Using these photographs, students will observe and render three distinct graphite drawings.

Cubism and Watercolor
Students learn a variety of watercolor techniques for both backgrounds and form development, with an emphasis on transparent layering and color mixing to enhance depth and dimension. Using their still life drawings, students trace each setup onto watercolor paper, focusing on overlapping shapes and forms to create a Cubist-inspired composition. They then apply watercolor using the techniques practiced in class. Keys to success include thoughtful layering, maintaining a sense of form amid overlapping elements, and developing strong value throughout—just as the Cubists did.
