The Bike Bus Team is a group of volunteers who hold specific responsibilities to keep the bike bus community going, and to keep the group safe in traffic. Depending on the size of a group, different roles are required for optimal safety. Please consider volunteering to be part of a Bike Bus Team!
ZOs handle responsibilities outside of each ride to facilitate the success of Bike Buses, such as managing communication with Bike Bus riders, organizing the Bike Bus Teams, planning routes, coordinating weather cancellations, and managing other logistics tasks with participants for each Bike Bus route.
ZOs should live in or near the route that they help organize. They would have the most local knowledge about their neighborhood and its people: where the constructions are happening, weather related updates, which neighbors are part of their Bike Buses, where to invite other interested neighbors., etc. ZOs would also coordinate activities across zones (e.g. Walk/Bike/Roll to School Day).
First bike(s) in the group. Make sure all other riders stay behind Lead(s)
Scan for potential hazards ahead and navigate the route
Be the last bicycle(s) in the ride
Take the full lane whenever possible to keep cars from passing
Anticipate and conflict conflict points, float through the group of riders
Know the route, anticipate and plan for intersections
Block ('cork') traffic at major intersections so the entire Bike Bus can get through
Communicators: Manage the distance between riders with "Tighten up" or "Ease up"
Tighten up: each bike speeds up to keep the bus together
Ease up: each bike slows to prevent bunching up/potential collision
Facilitate communication for the Bike Bus Team
Have a few Sweeps, Corkers, and Comms to keep the long line of riders safe
Consider coordinating with Arlington Police Department to manage traffic congestion
Add some pizazz to the Bike Bus! Volunteer to bring music or bubbles. Decorate your bike or bike gear. One local school hired Keytar Bear to play on a bike trailer. Another (same?) school invited the School of Honk to join as featured musicians. The sky’s the limit!
