Harare is the largest city and the capital of Zimbabwe. Due to the pleasant year round climate, it has been dubbed Africa’s Sunshine city. It is young, vibrant and well laid-out with wide streets lined with Jacaranda trees, modern buildings and numerous parks and gardens. There is plenty on offer to visitors in terms of accommodation, restaurants and entertainment. From the theatre and arts, to shopping, sporting events, nightlife as well as cultural and historic attractions there is no shortage of activities for your enjoyment.
Twinned with Aberdeen in Scotland, Bulawayo is the hub of the province of Matabeleland and the second largest city in Zimbabwe. It is an attractive city with wide tree-lined streets and avenues, beautiful parks and a pleasing mixture of Victorian and modern architecture. Bulawayo houses the country’s Natural History Museum, a Railway Museum and the Bulawayo Art Gallery. The Mzilikazi Arts and Craft Centre as well as the Bulawayo Home Industries Centre are worth a visit for the ethnic crafts produced. Some 22 km west of the city is a Unesco World Heritage site, the Khami Ruins, one of Southern Africa’s magnificent Late Iron Age ruins.
The central area of the Eastern Highlands comprises of the Bvumba Mountains, which lie 25 km south east of the small bustling town of Mutare. Bvumba is the Shona word for mist, and the area is known for cool green forests, rolling hills and rugged mountain peaks reminiscent of the English countryside.
The rugged mountains and downs of Nyanga in Zimbabwe’s Eastern Highlands lie in an area of charm and mystery. Here the country’s highest mountain, Mount Nyangani stands sentinel over far flung peaks, grass-coloured slopes, waterfalls, forested gorges, trout streams and masses of wild flowers. Stretching for 100 km along the border with Mozambique, Nyanga is rich in archaeological sites, lush with tea and coffee plantations and some of the loveliest cottages and hotels nestle in the mountains where log-fires burn in the hearth. Winding scenic roads lead to Africa’s second highest waterfall, Mtarazi Falls, and plains game fill the national park.
Hwange National Park is the largest game reserve in Zimbabwe and is home to 105 mammal species and almost 400 birds have been recorded. Great herds of elephant are found - sometimes over 100 strong, and Hwange is famous for its huge tuskers. The park covers 14 600 square kilometres, and all of Zimbabwe’s specially protected animals are to be found within the park. The population of African Wild Dogs in Hwange is thought to be one of the largest surviving groups in Africa today.
Mana Pools is Zimbabwe’s second World Heritage site and is totally unique in that it is the only park with species such as elephant, lion and buffalo, in which you may walk unaccompanied. This privilege, along with the large and varied wildlife population and the diverse landscape, make Mana Pools the magical place it is. Mana means “four” in Shona in reference to the four large permanent pools which have been formed by the meandering Zambezi River, which adds another dimension to any safari in the form of canoe trips.
The capital of the Masvingo Province bears the same name and its claim to fame is its proximity to the Great Zimbabwe National Monument, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest ruins in sub-Saharan Africa. It was once the centre of a vast empire known as the Munhumutapa Empire and was built with dry-stone technique using no mortar to hold the stones together. Despite this, the buildings have survived for seven centuries. Lake Mutirikwe Recreational Park is a popular destination for boating and fishing, while the game park to the north is home to a rich variety of plains game including white rhino imported from the Umfolozi National Park in South Africa.
Matobo Hills is an area of exquisite beauty, steeped in tribal history, ancient mystery and dramatic rock landscapes. The national park has been given UNESCO World Heritage status and is home to both white and black rhinoceros, sable antelope and the world’s densest population of leopard. Birdlife in the Matobo National park is prolific and includes the highest concentration of black eagles in the world. Once the home of the San (Bushman), this area contains the richest source of the rock art found anywhere. Not only is it here that the Ndebele people buried their great king, Mzilikazi, but Cecil John Rhodes was also laid to rest on the “Hill of the Benevolent Spirit” or “Worlds View” as named by him.
As one of the seven natural wonders of the world and a truly awe-inspiring sight no itinerary is complete without a visit to the majestic Victoria Falls. Appropriately known as `the Smoke that Thunders’, the Victoria Falls have the largest single curtain of falling water in the world and 70% of the exquisite vistas are seen from the Zimbabwe rainforest. If this wasn’t reason enough to visit, Victoria Falls is also the unchallenged adventure capital of Africa. Adrenalin junkies are spoilt for choice with the number of thrilling activities on offer, yet there is still plenty to do for those more faint of heart.
Lake Kariba is one of the world’s largest man-made lakes, at over 220 km long and 30 km at its widest point, it is no wonder Lake Kariba is referred to as an inland sea! A laid back holiday playground, with a host of activities, fishing being one of the more obvious - the Tiger Fish is the most sought after catch. Boating is fantastic and the sunsets over Lake Kariba are legendary. Game viewing is superb in the Matusadona National Park which lies on the southern shores of the lake; it boasts the Big Five and is well known for the conservation efforts of the black rhino.
