Urban Light is the NGO that empowers at risk young males in Thailand from a life of exploitation and trafficking. My volunteer role as the English teacher allowed me to be in charge of the classroom of 6 to 9 students with ages ranging from 13 to 18. As the English instructor, I created a monthly lesson plan that aligns with the different levels of the students in the classroom while ensuring that the lessons are interactive, creative and engaging for the teenager students.
Ownership: Despite being a volunteer position, the English teacher role at Urban Light gave me a full ownership of my classroom. I was able create my own lesson plans, my own assessment tests and testing different teaching styles to see which suits with the students the best. Due to the ownership, I was able to see both my capacity and limitations as an English teacher.
Forming connections: The role not only allowed to hone my class facilitation skills but also forming connections with the students. Since the students are teenagers with complex background, the conventional classroom approach did not work well. Thus, I had be come up with new ways to make them interested in the lesson and to trust me as their teacher. For example, doing activities with them outside of the classroom.
