Introduction
The purpose of this assignment was for us to take a look at the different ways social media impacts ourselves and the world around us, as well as other information on the types of social medias that are widely used and by whom.
Social Media Addiction Survey
As a part of this assignment, we were tasked to take the "Am I Addicted to Social Media" online quiz. My results told me that I was "fairly reliant" on social media. These results stated that even though I do have some sort of reliance on social media, it could be worse (so not entirely "addicted" to social media) and suggested for me to re-think the amount of time I spend on social media overall. I agree that it would be beneficial to start decreasing the amount of time I spend scrolling on social media because it tends to lead me to procrastination and overall isn't the best way to be spending a lot of my time.
Interesting Social Media Statistic
A statistic that I found very interesting from one of the articles that we looked at was the percentage of Americans that use each Social Media site. Before seeing this statistic, I figured that Facebook would have one of the highest percentages of users (if not the highest) because I myself and almost everyone I know (especially those with other social media accounts) has a Facebook account. It was interesting to see that YouTube has a growing number of users and that it was above Facebook.
Social Media's Impact on Society
In general, I think it is hard to say whether social media has an overall positive impact or an overall negative impact. I think both are equally present. On the one side, Social media can have negative impacts; for example, I tend to spend a lot of time scrolling on social media sites when I should be completing schoolwork or doing other tasks. Social media can also negatively impact a person's mental health, body image, or overall outlook on the world. But on the other hand, social media can also have positive impacts. Social media allows for broad connections that wouldn't be possible or as coinvent without it. It allows for me to connect with friends or family members and see the things that are currently happening in their life or what they are interested in on a frequent basis. I think it would be beneficial for everyone who uses social media to take a step back once and a while and evaluate what they are actively viewing/contributing to on social media, and how this is potentially impacting them, as well as limiting the amount of time they allow themselves to be on social media (that way it doesn't take away from their life outside of social media).
Lessons Learned
This project/lesson gave us a broader understanding of the different sites that are considered "social media", how social media is used, and who it is used by. This project pushed us to think critically about social media as a whole (as well as our use of it). I will use the information I've learned from this lesson/project to evaluate the overall impacts of social media on my life and start working towards lowering my use of/"reliance" on social media sites.
